The dealer vs non dealer logbook service debate is one that has many Australian VW owners confused. In this post we’ll break down everything you need to know about servicing your beloved Volkswagen.
Where can I have my VW Logbook Service done?
In 2010 the Australian law changed to allow independent motor mechanics to perform logbook services and maintain the manufacturer warranty. This is great news for car owners as the dealerships no longer have a monopoly on the industry. The Competition and Consumer Act of 2010 states that any service centre can perform logbook servicing and maintain the manufacturer warranty as long as all services are performed in accordance with the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule and using approved parts.
Is my Volkswagen warranty affected by an independent VW service centre?
By law you can have your vehicle serviced at an independent motor mechanic, but there are a few conditions. Firstly, in order to keep your VW warranty, service intervals must be adhered to so that in the case of a warranty claim you can prove that the manufacturer’s service requirements were met. At Central Autohaus we know exactly what has to be done to keep your warranty in tact as we specialise in Volkswagen and only used approved oils, fluids and parts.
What differentiates a good VW mechanic from a bad one?
Deciding on the best Volkswagen mechanic near you can be a difficult choice. Just because you can have your vehicle serviced anywhere, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still do your research. It’s important to choose a VW workshop that has a good reputation, modern diagnostic equipment, and well trained and experienced mechanics that are well versed in all Volkswagen models.
The truth is that many smaller workshops will not have the necessary diagnostic equipment nor the specialisation required to repair your vehicle to the exact manufacturer requirements.
We may be a little biased, but we consider ourselves Sydney’s Volkswagen specialists. Central Autohaus has been servicing and repairing VW’s since 1984 and we are experts on all models. We’ve repaired everything from a Golf to a Passat to a Transporter Van! Furthermore, our technician’s regular and extensive training keeps them up to date on all of the latest VW design developments and service requirements. Our Alexandria workshop is fitted out with all of the latest tools and diagnostic equipment to diagnose your VW fault quickly and efficiently.

How often should I service my VW?
VW service and maintenance intervals are every 15,000 kms or 12 months, and it’s important that you complete these logbook services not only to keep your new car warranty but to also ensure your cars safety and longevity.
How much does a VW logbook service cost?
Cost is usually a factor that causes most car owners to shop around. Thankfully the competition and consumer act helped make car servicing more competitive once it broke down the dealerships monopoly over the market. Generally speaking dealership services are still the most expensive as they generally have the largest overheads and costs. Going to and independent mechanic is a much more cost effective solution, however you should be vary wary of offers that are too good to be true. Some mechanics will try to cut corners by using non-approved parts in order to be more competitive. Central Autohaus uses only OEM parts and manufacturer recommended oils and fluids so that you can rest assured you are getting the best quality repairs. We also strive to provide a more personalised service whilst being better priced than the VW dealer – that’s why we have so many repeat customers.
